AASHE (Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education)

AASHE is a professional, membership-based association of colleges and universities working to advance sustainability in higher education in the U.S. and Canada. The association also provides a professional home for campus sustainability coordinators, directors, and other practitioners. Its mission is to promote sustainability in all sectors of higher education - from governance and operations to curriculum and outreach - through education, communication, research and professional development. AASHE Partners include Businesses, NGO's, and government agencies. AASHE's website ( www.aashe.org ) houses many resources to assist members in their campus sustainability efforts, including a sustainability policy bank, a campus sustainability professionals page, interest groups, publications, and classroom resources, as well as useful links for virtually every aspect of campus operations. While most resources are members-only, several are available to everyone. Everyone is welcome to subscribe to AASHE Bulletin. APPA (Association of Higher Education Facilities Officers)

This organization has developed a useful homepage for environmental managers and decision-makers. It includes a list of environmental publications, and updated environmental policies and regulations for such issues as water quality, hazardous waste, environmental management, asbestos, OSHA, pesticides, state legislation, and air quality.

 

Association of College Administration Professionals

This group strives to meet the needs of college administrators that were not being met by other organizations and groups.

A national non-profit organization that helps college students start, strengthen, and expand their community service programs.

Campus Green Vote A project of the Center for Environmental Citizenship. CGV is a national non-profit, non-partisan project dedicated to training and organizing a diverse national network of young voters to protect the environment; "Blueprint for a Green Campus" can be found at this site.

 

Class of 2000 Report Presents information and strategies for environmental education, campus environmental practices, and activism in U.S. colleges and universities. It is recommended reading for anyone interested in the environment and the role of higher education in preparing a generation of professionals to tackle the world's most critical problems. The report is brought to you by the Nathan Cummings Foundation.

 

Committee for the National Institute for the Environment A national, non-profit organization working to improve the scientific basis for making decisions on environmental issues through creation of a new, non-regulatory environmental science and education entity, the National Institute for the Environment (NIE). This site includes a Directory of Higher Education Environmental Programs, providing interdisciplinary environmental program information at colleges and universities in the U.S. or abroad.

 

Consortium for Environmental Education in Medicine A nonprofit organization with a mission to expand the capacity of colleges and universities to make an environmentally just and sustainable future a foundation of learning, research, operations and interaction within the local, regional and global community.

 

College and University Recycling Council (CURC) Organized to facilitate information exchange between institutions of higher education to learn about waste reduction, recycling and waste management. CURC now has a membership of 150 college and university based waste management officials.

 

Earth Day Network Believes that it's time for a Powershift: moving our energy system away from outdated, polluting fossil fuels to clean, high-tech renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

 

Free the Planet! A campus-based movement to confront polluter lawlessness and government inaction through local, regional, and national action. Making a Difference College Guides An invaluable opportunity to learn about distinctive and unusual colleges. Students who roll up their sleeves to feed the homeless, tutor at-risk kids, protect the environment, and sign up with AmeriCorps will find these college guides a goldmine of information about colleges that support their wish to make a better world.

 

National Alliance for Green Education (NAAGE) A student-inspired consortium of small, independent liberal arts colleges with a commitment to environmental studies programs. They combine their varied institutional strengths to maximize educational opportunities for students and faculty.

 

Second Nature A nonprofit organization working to help colleges and universities expand their efforts to make environmentally sustainable and just action a foundation of learning and practice. Education for Sustainability (EFS) is a lifelong learning process that leads to an informed and involved citizenry having the creative problem-solving skills, scientific and social literacy, and commitment to engage in responsible individual and cooperative actions. Second Nature focuses on colleges and universities because they educate our future teachers, leaders, managers, policymakers and other professionals.

 

Sierra Club Student Coalition Strives to help students become the most effective, responsible activists they can be, by tailoring and amending the resources of the Sierra Club to fit their needs. The Sierra Student initiates and organizes national, regional, and local issues campaigns, uniting individual students, campus groups, and environmental organizations in an effort to create positive change.

 

Starfish Provides educational resources for sustainability through a collection of free databases designed to assist college and university faculty from all disciplines integrate environmental and sustainability issues into their teaching.

 

Student Environmental Action Coalition A student run and student led national network of progressive organizations and individuals whose aim is to uproot environmental injustices through action and education. They define the environment to include the physical, economical, political and cultural conditions in which we live. By challenging the power structure which threatens these environmental conditions, SEAC works to create progressive social change on both the local and global levels. Through this united effort, thousands of members have translated their concern into action by sharing resources, building coalitions, and challenging the limited mainstream definition of environmental issues.

US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG)/Student PIRGs Registered hundreds of thousands of student voters, helped to pass the nation's most effective recycling laws, stopped Clean Water Act violators, strengthened the Clean Air Act, and promoted cutting-edge pollution prevention policies. PIRG student volunteers also organize community service projects ranging from food and clothing drives to beach clean-ups and waterway restorations.

 

University Leaders for a Sustainable Future (ULSF) Established to promote and support academic leadership for the advancement of global environmental literacy.

 

Western Washington University Campus Planning Seminar Course and resources related to sustainabilty efforts at Western Michigan University.

 

Wildlife Rockies Field Institute A non-profit educational organization that teaches field-based environmental studies courses for college students. All courses integrate studies of environmental policy, ecology, history and philosophy through focused studies of regional environmental issues and threats to specific ecosystems.

 

World Resources Institute/Management Institute for Environment and Business Founded in 1990 to help companies improve environmental quality through business success. MEB seeks to demonstrate and communicate to the business community the opportunities of sustainable development. We do this by educating current and future business leaders. MEB works with business schools to integrate environmental issues into the core curricula, and we provide direct industry outreach and training. MEB merged with WRI in October, 1996.

Cambridge University - Environmental Institute The Environmental Office is responsible for promoting sound policies and practices throughout the University to protect and enhance the local and global environment.

 

Carnegie Melon University - Green Design Initiative This is a major interdisciplinary research effort to make an impact on environmental quality through green design by forming partnerships with companies, government agencies and foundations to develop processes that can improve environmental quality and product quality while enhancing economic development.

 

Connecticut College - Living Green The College has a tradition of operating as an Environmental Model by initiating and implementing innovative policies and programs that promote environmental sustainability.

 

Cornell University - Center for the Environment This university established intergeneration obligation as a basis for managing the environment and developed the concept of sustainable development.

George Washington Green University Initiative Began as a grassroots movement to implement sustainable practices into all aspects of life at George Washington University. This site includes environmental information resources, a curriculum guide and strategic plan, the institute for the environment, and a what's new section.

 

Environmental Action Committee at Harvard The EAC deals with a variety of environmental issues at campus through international levels. We are interested in spreading awareness of current environmental challenges, taking effective action to sustain our environment and promote environmental justice, and organizing events and activities to celebrate and protect our environment.

 

Harvard Green Campus Initiative A university-wide collaborative effort between faculty, administrators, staff and students with the goals of reducing the environmental impacts of campus operations and promoting environmental sustainability.

 

Humboldt State's Campus Center for Appropriate Technology The mission of the CCAT residents is to demonstrate technologies which contribute to a healthy environment, to examine the ethical and social consequences of the use of technology and to provide a forum for experiential learning.

 

Humboldt State Campus Recycling Program This program provides a means for the student body to take responsibility for the waste flow generated and to make a positive contribution to the quality of their environment through waste reduction, prevention and education.

North Carolina State University - Center for Integrated Pest Management North Carolina State University's "Biological Pest Control." Includes advantages, disadvantages, and approaches to biological pest control.

 

North Carolina State University - Environmental Sustainability Fosters an environmentally sustainable campus and educates students regarding environmentally sustainable lifestyles.

 

Northland College Sigurd Olsen Environmental Institute The Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute was founded as the environmental outreach arm of Northland College in 1972. Located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Ashland, Wisconsin, its purpose is to increase public understanding of the complex relationships between natural and cultural environments in the Lake Superior basin and to assist in developing workable solutions to regional environmental problems.

 

Northwestern University Recycling For each of the past three years, their recycling efforts have diverted more than 1,000 tons from disposal in landfills.

Penn State University - Green Destiny Council An association of students, faculty, and staff committed to promoting ecological responsibility at Penn State.

 

Penn State Indicators Report An extensive environmental audit that can serve as a model for audits at other schools.

 

Princeton University - Environmental Reform Committee The Princeton Environmental Reform Committee (PERC) is a group of students, graduate students, faculty, and staff that work with University Offices and departments to encourage responsible environmental campus management.

 

Rutgers University New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability.

 

South Carolina Sustainable Universities Initiative Encompasses interdisciplinary conferences for faculty at each of the three universities (Medical University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and University of South Carolina) and serves as a statewide sustainability network.

University of Maine Cooperative Extension (UMCE) Offers a regularly scheduled Compost School. The objective of the school is to provide training to people interested and/or involved with medium and large-scale composting operations. This course is offered as a certificate program by UMCE and will train personnel to be qualified compost site operators.
