The Story of Stuff

The Story of Stuff

This award-winning short film brilliantly explains the linear chain of production and it's mass effects on the world as a whole. Annie Leonard narrates and reveals the nature of the beast: externalized costs, overconsumption, exploitation of third world countries, and people's acceptance of CONSUMER as their primary identity. The Story of Stuff clearly defines and diagnoses the problems at hand, and offers achievable and practical solutions to serve as a remedy. The companion website to the film contains great links to resources and opportunities for change.

Shift Happens

Shift Happens

Did you know China will soon become the #1 English-speaking country in the world? Did you know that the top-ten jobs that will be in demand in 2010 didn't exist in 2004? Did you know that if MySpace was a country, it would be the 11th-largest in the world? This video presents startling facts that demonstrate how rapidly the world is changing. It is up to us to understand how it is changing, why it is changing, and what we can do to keep up with these changes. The economy, the way we communicate, the way we live— the world— is shifting.

Revolution Green

Revolution Green

This documentary, Revolution Green: A True Story of Biodiesel Fuel in America, examines the rising price of oil and the sustainable alternative of biodiesel fuel. The main story follows Bob and Kelley King, who created the first biodiesal refinery in Maui, Hawaii. Music legend Willie Nelson heard about King's dream and used satellite radio to almost single-handedly reach truck drivers across America and educate them about biodiesal fuel and its benefit to the environment and the economy. You can watch the trailer, learn more about the film, and purchase the DVD on the website.

Chris Jordan - Photographic Art

Chris Jordan - Photographic Art

Chris Jordan is a consumer, so he doesn't claim to be in the position to finger-wag about overconsumption. With his photography, he seeks only to "portals to a kind of cultural self inquiry." Jordan composes breathtaking and thought-provoking photographs of overconsumption–from piles of cell phones to stacks of freighters, his images clearly illustrate the enormous amount of waste our current way of life produces, like the picture of cell phone chargers to the left. You can view the photograph collections, locate gallery showings, and purchase posters at his website.

The Most Terrifying Movie You Will Ever See

The Most Terrifying Movie You Will Ever See

Oregon Science teacher Greg Craven makes a compelling case for taking action against global climate change. In this 10-minute video Craven outlines the risks for action and inaction to GCC, and supports his claim that if you believe in global warming or you don't, his theory is irrefutable. It's an ingenious interpretation of the future and Craven speaks to the world at large with tact and respect.

"It's my midlife crisis and my magnum opus, my nervous breakdown and my enlightenment experience all rolled into one." Craven's opus has become one of the most viewed videos on the web, and for good reason. Once you watch this video you will refuse to ignore his words. Check this video out here.

Think Like a Forest!

Think Like a Forest!

Pierre Terre uses "the forest" in his metaphor for a sustainable world. The forest produces it's own food, recycles it's waste, and sustains itself. Humans can use this model to refine our own model of life. Waste recycling is like dead leaves nourishing the soil; small businesses are like small trees, free to grow in different ways. Check out this fun, but relevent video at Pierre's website.
